Sustainable cosmetics through AI

IBM and L'Oréal aim to revolutionise the industry with new software

The IT giant IBM and the world's largest cosmetics manufacturer L'Oréal have agreed to cooperate in order to drive forward the development of new cosmetics with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). L'Oréal wants to use generative AI and IBM's expertise to use more sustainable raw materials and reduce its energy consumption and material waste, the leading international companies announced. A customised basic AI model is being developed, which is the first of its kind in the industry. The software is intended to support the 4,000 employees in L'Oréal's research and innovation teams in the future. The French group operates 20 research centres in eleven countries worldwide.

Offensive for organic products by 2030

‘As part of our digital transformation programme, this partnership will increase the speed and scope of our innovations and reformulations,’ emphasises Stéphane Ortiz, Head of Innovation Métiers and Product Development at L'Oréal. The billion-euro company wants to manufacture the majority of its products from organically produced materials by 2030 and make intensive use of the circular economy. According to the company, new products will achieve ever higher standards of sustainability, individualisation and inclusivity. The alliance with IBM represents an exciting new era for the innovation and development process, even though the company already has great expertise in beauty science and data structuring, emphasised Matthieu Cassier, Chief Transformation & Digital Officer at L'Oréal.

AI data changes recipe development

According to IBM, the innovative AI model utilises a large number of formulas and component data from L'Oréal. This should accelerate the development of new products as well as the reformulation of existing cosmetics and the growth of production. ‘We believe in the power of purpose-driven, customised AI to transform businesses,’ says Guilhaume Leroy-Méline, Distinguished Engineer at IBM Consulting France. IBM Consulting will also help the prominent client to reshape recipe development. A deeper understanding of renewable ingredients will help L'Oréal to develop more sustainable products.

IBM is doing pioneering work

So-called base models are used for the new technology. They are able to perform various tasks and transfer information from one area to another. IBM is doing pioneering work in this field, including the use of base models in areas such as language processing, chemistry and geodata.
