Fermentation instead of palm oil

Melt&Marble expands production of designer fats with new financing

Swedish biotech start-up Melt&Marble, which produces tailor-made, animal-free fats through fermentation, has raised €7.3 million in a Series A financing round to expand production and bring its first ingredients to market. According to the company, they offer sustainable alternatives to conventional fats such as palm and coconut oil or animal fats in personal care products and are said to offer improved functionality, for example in terms of texture, skin feel and bioactivity in cosmetics. The company can supply cost-effective, regionally produced ingredients that meet technical requirements as well as environmental criteria and sustainability goals. The financing round is led by Swedish deep tech investor Industrifonden, with participation from the EU's European Innovation Council and strategic partners Beiersdorf and Valio. The market for oils, fats and lipids relevant to the Melt&Marble platform is said to have a volume of more than US$100 billion. Further information ...
