Faster more beautiful

L'Oréal and Nvidia accelerate beauty innovations with the help of AI

L'Oréal is expanding its AI partnership with US tech giant Nvidia to accelerate beauty innovations through AI-assisted development of chemical ingredients. By integrating Nvidia’s Alchemy machine learning framework into its research and innovation, the French group aims to develop an AI engine for beauty and skincare, it announced. This will enable significant progress in the discovery of new formulations, as the AI predicts how molecules act and interact at the atomic level.

From laptop to laboratory

The partnership between the two companies is evolving from a marketing collaboration towards research and development of scientific insights. Through the virtual simulation of ingredients and textures, thousands of parameters can be tested simultaneously, it was stated. This significantly reduces the time taken from the initial laboratory concept to market readiness. The research process can be up to a hundred times faster than conventional methods. This leads to more agile innovation processes, for example in the development of active ingredients for skin protection and the prevention of premature skin ageing.

Sun protection and a healthy complexion

The initiative is currently focusing on two key pillars of skin research: sun protection and skin tone management. Nvidia Alchemi enables formulations to be identified in a digital environment before they reach the laboratory. By optimising molecular behaviour, L’Oréal aims to set industry standards and offer scientifically precise beauty solutions. “By applying AI-powered molecular simulations to our proprietary active ingredients, we are bridging the gap between discoveries at the atomic level and real-world benefits for consumers,” says L’Oréal’s Head of Research, Barbara Lavernos. “In this way, we are accelerating the development of effective and sensorial products.”
