The BASF Group, in collaboration with the Chinese biotechnology company Bota Biosciences, has launched a new active ingredient for skincare. ‘SkinNexus Collag3n’ is an artificially produced collagen type III fragment with a sequence identical to that found in humans, manufactured using yeast fermentation. The development is based on a combination of artificial intelligence, synthetic biology and skin research. Bota Biosciences, based in Hangzhou, specialises in AI-supported bioproduction and combines artificial intelligence, synthetic biology and industrial fermentation to develop new ingredients for various industries. BASF intends to market the new product primarily for personal care products.

AI accelerates active ingredient development

According to the companies, more than 2,000 collagen fragments were screened and assessed for their industrial producibility during the development of the vegan active ingredient. The aim was to bridge the gap between research and production and to accelerate the development of new cosmetic active ingredients. The combination of AI-supported research and biotechnological production enables a more efficient selection and scaling of suitable candidates.

Studies show improved skin texture

It has been demonstrated in 3D models of reconstructed skin that the active ingredient promotes a healthy, natural skin environment. Clinical trials involving women aged between 53 and 70 showed improvements in skin appearance in terms of sagging and wrinkles after four weeks. The results outperformed a collagen reference product used at ten times the concentration. The active ingredient is therefore particularly aimed at applications in the fields of anti-ageing and skin regeneration. “This collaboration is proof that Physical AI for Biomanufacturing can turn cutting-edge science into commercial, sustainable, and high-performance ingredients,” said Cheryl Cui, founder and CEO of Bota.
