Strict EU rules demanded for third-country suppliers in online trade

70 non-governmental organisations from the fields of environmental and consumer protection, industry and trade have called on the EU to close loopholes in online trade that allow third-country suppliers to sell products that do not comply with EU regulations. The rapid growth of e-commerce means that sellers can circumvent the rules of the European single market system, according to the joint statement. The signatories criticise the fact that such marketplaces bear little responsibility for compliance with safety, environmental and copyright rules. Among other things, they are calling for marketplaces to be classified as importers for sellers outside the EU, the appointment of EU-based persons responsible for product and packaging compliance, strict testing requirements and more resources for customs and market surveillance.
