Twist stick made of paper
New packaging solution works without plastic
The Toly Group, a UK-based manufacturer of packaging for luxury cosmetics brands, has developed a paper stick that does not use any plastic at all. ‘Most paper products are not made entirely of paper – they contain plastic mechanisms wrapped in paper,’ the company emphasises. The “Paper Twist Up Stick”, on the other hand, is truly plastic-free and can be fully recycled in the paper cycle. The innovation was made possible by a collaboration with PaperFoam. The Dutch manufacturer of sustainable packaging specialises in paper foams.
Sustainable innovation with PaperFoam
According to PaperFoam, the biodegradable packaging can be made into almost any shape using a patented injection moulding process. The combination of four natural ingredients such as industrial potato starch, paper fibres from sustainable sources, water and an unspecified biodegradable material is used to produce a paste that is injected into aluminium moulds and baked at around 200 degrees Celsius. The mixed material can simply be composted or recycled with other paper. ‘Within a few weeks, it is broken down by nature itself, without leaving any harmful residues,’ says PaperFoam. The company's production facilities are located in the United States, Malaysia, China and the Netherlands.
