The scent of Andalusia

Givaudan launches Mediterranean Labdanum Absolute

Fragrance manufacturer Givaudan has presented Labdanum Absolute SIGNature, a new natural ingredient with a distinctive fragrance identity. The innovation, artfully developed at Givaudan's "House of Naturals" site in Grasse, is inspired by the desire to create a lifelike fragrance of the famous cistus roses of Andalusia that captures the sunny warmth of the Mediterranean coast and complements body care and fine fragrance creations. Labdanum Absolute is designed to enrich skincare products and fine perfumes with a dry, lingering amber note with woody and mineral nuances.

Refined through molecular distillation

"Our innovation team has leveraged advanced engineering processes to elevate the crude cistus extract into a highly refined labdanum absolute," emphasises Paul-Erwan Camenen, Head of Fragrance Ingredients Business. Givaudan refines the raw material at its factory near Seville using a special molecular distillation process. The cistus resins are separated by molecular weight under vacuum and by evaporation at gentle temperatures. The process preserves the original character of the labdanum and highlights its subtle olfactory facets. The company emphasises that these are intended to lend a modern touch to oriental and Middle Eastern creations in particular.

Harvested by hand using traditional methods

Givaudan's site for local premium raw materials also maintains the traditional practice of harvesting rockrose by hand. In accordance with local environmental regulations, selective cutting is carried out, which contributes to the preservation of Andalusia's exceptional cultural heritage and demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental protection. Cistus plants are useful, medicinal and ornamental plants and an important part of Mediterranean hard-leaved vegetation. Labdanum Absolute now complements the portfolio of Givaudan's fragrance raw materials division and is available throughout the industry.
