Skin care powder with added sun protection

Biodegradable solution expands Eastman’s Esmeri range

The US specialty chemicals manufacturer Eastman has expanded its ‘Esmeri’ product family to include a readily biodegradable, non-nanoparticulate micro-powder for skin and sun care. The ingredient ‘Esmeri SK1N10’ is based on cellulose esters, the company announced. It is said to create a soft-focus effect immediately upon application, dry quickly, reduce stickiness and minimise skin shine. The result is a soft, powdery-matt feel on the skin, according to the company. The multifunctional ingredient can be used in serums, creams, sprays, eye care products and sunscreens.

Enhanced sun protection

In suncare products, Esmeri SK1N10 is designed to enhance the effectiveness of organic and inorganic UV filters by scattering UV radiation. This sun protection boost makes it possible to reduce the concentration of UV filters whilst simultaneously improving the formulation’s sensory properties. Pores, fine lines and wrinkles become less visible, according to Eastman. The ingredient is suitable for both water-based systems and oil-in-water emulsions and can be used in combination with commonly used active ingredients such as retinoids.

An alternative to conventional microparticles

According to Eastman, Esmeri SK1N10 is readily biodegradable and, under the relevant EU regulation, is not classified as a synthetic polymer microparticle. It is said to be an alternative to polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and nylon-12, as well as to silica and traditional cellulose powders. In an Eastman survey of 150 research and development specialists across eleven countries, one in two respondents stated that the biodegradability of ingredients would become the norm within the next two to five years. At the same time, only 52 per cent said they were satisfied with the current range of products on offer.
