Revolution in the production of environmentally friendly biosurfactants
Evonik opens the world’s first industrial plant for rhamnolipid biosurfactants
Evonik has inaugurated the world’s first plant for the production of rhamnolipid biosurfactants on an industrial scale in Slovakia. The plant, which was built with an investment in the three-digit million range, offers environmentally friendly biosurfactants that are produced from renewable raw materials such as corn. Rhamnolipids can further accelerate the green transformation in the cleaning, beauty and personal care industry. This development strengthens Evonik’s position in the Biosolutions segment.
Sustainable alternative
The rhamnolipids are produced using a biotechnological process and are biodegradable and toxicologically harmless. They are increasingly in demand as they represent a sustainable alternative to surfactants based on fossil raw materials or tropical oils.
Long-term focus on sustainability and innovation
Evonik plans to invest over three billion euros in sustainable solutions by 2030, including the production of biosurfactants. The new plant at Evonik Fermas in Slovenská Ľupča is an important step towards promoting carbon cycles and biodiversity, while ensuring product performance.
