Personal care in aluminium cans
Ball Corporation is investing in packaging startup Meadow
The international aluminium company Ball Corporation has acquired a minority stake in the Swedish packaging company Meadow. The aim is to jointly manufacture fully recyclable aluminium cans for personal care and household products. Ball will supply cans and lids that are used in reusable dispensers. The startup company Meadow is planning to use them to conquer international markets. Delivery is scheduled to begin during the course of the year, as soon as Meadow has commenced regular operations, according to a statement from the two companies. By using aluminium cans that were originally used primarily for beverages, Meadow is supporting the circular economy.
Recycling without loss of quality
The Meadow principle is simple: an aluminium can serves as a cartridge that is filled with soap, shampoo or other products. It can be placed in a reusable dispenser. By using prefill solutions, the company reduces material and energy consumption while optimising logistics and transport costs. ‘We believe that reusable and recyclable packaging will play an important role in the future of personal care and household products,’ said Jay Billings, president of Ball Growth Ventures. Aluminium is an ideal circular material because it can be recycled over and over again without loss of quality. Thanks to its global network of plants, Ball can supply the Meadow solution to a wide range of markets. This will ensure that the technology offers global consumer goods companies maximum efficiency, sustainability and scalability. ‘Together, we are accelerating the adoption of circular packaging across multiple categories by global consumer goods brands,’ says Victor Ljungberg, CEO of Meadow. The solution offers consumers a high level of convenience.
No new products, please!
Meadow was founded in 2020 to develop scalable packaging solutions. Its philosophy is to use existing supply chains, product familiarity and established recycling infrastructures to contribute to the circular economy, rather than inventing new products and processes. ‘By reusing aluminium beverage cans, we have found a flexible solution that works across industries – from personal care to beauty care, from home care to food,’ says Ljungberg. Ball Corporation employs 16,000 people worldwide and reported net sales of twelve billion US dollars in 2023.
