Paper instead of plastic

Nissha develops sturdy pulp injection lids for packaging

Japanese sustainable packaging solutions specialist Nissha is launching pulp injection lids, a paper-based alternative to traditional plastic caps. The fully recyclable closures combine a paper-like texture and smooth surface with the high stability of injection-moulded parts. According to the company, the process allows complex shapes such as ribs, flanges, embossing and individual trademarks to be produced with precision, so that the lids can be used on various existing packaging lines without any loss of functionality.

Robust and recyclable

Nissha emphasises that the surface is inspired by traditional Japanese paper and conveys a natural, high-quality impression. The technology is aimed in particular at companies that need to reduce plastic content and comply with regulatory requirements. The pulp injection components consist of 90 per cent bio-based materials and can be recycled via paper and cardboard cycles. They are also designed to reduce CO₂ emissions from procurement to disposal. Despite a low wall thickness of 0.6 to 1.0 millimetres, the caps are considered robust and, according to the manufacturer, are up to 40 per cent lighter than PET alternatives, which reduces transport volume and shipping weight.

For high-quality, sensitive products

For applications in the premium segment, Nissha points to hygienic advantages: the material generates significantly less fibre dust than conventional pulp solutions and is processed in high-class clean rooms that are also used for medical products, pharmaceuticals and food. The company combines pulp and biocomposites with moulding technologies to establish sustainable packaging as an alternative to plastic, even for high hygiene standards.
