Panthenol from maize
Cosphatec launches D-panthenol produced via biofermentation
The Hamburg-based company Cosphatec has unveiled two variants of the active ingredient D-panthenol (provitamin B5), both of which are of entirely natural origin. Both raw materials are produced via biofermentation using non-genetically modified maize and, according to Cosphatec, comply with the COSMOS and NATRUE standards. “Cosphaderm Panthenol natural 98” and “Cosphaderm Panthenol natural 75” are said to be particularly suitable for sustainable, vegan applications in skin, hair and nail care and to have moisturising, soothing and regenerating effects, according to Cosphatec.
Highly concentrated and transparent
Cosphaderm Panthenol natural 98 is a highly concentrated, viscous variant with an active ingredient content of 98 per cent. Cosphaderm Panthenol natural 75 contains 75 per cent panthenol dissolved in water and is a transparent, slightly viscous solution. Thanks to its pre-diluted form, the raw material can be easily incorporated into water-based formulations. Both variants are designed to enable the use of panthenol across a wide range of natural cosmetics formulations. Cosphatec recommends a concentration of 0.1 to 5 per cent, depending on the formulation. The Hamburg-based company has been developing raw materials for the cosmetics industry for more than 20 years.
Moisture for hair and nails
Panthenol is converted into pantothenic acid in the skin, an important component of cellular metabolism for skin regeneration and repair, the company explained. It strengthens the skin barrier and helps to retain moisture in the skin. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and soothes irritated skin. According to Cosphatec, panthenol is therefore used, amongst other things, in products for irritated or stressed skin, as well as in after-sun and baby care products. Furthermore, panthenol can strengthen the hair, reduce hair breakage and provide greater shine and manageability. In addition, panthenol also penetrates the nail plate and, thanks to its moisturising effect, ensures greater flexibility and strength in the nails.
