Packaging as data carriers

Sleever and Avery Dennison present solution for greater traceability

International packaging companies Sleever and Avery Dennison have entered into a strategic partnership to jointly develop "smart" packaging solutions, particularly for the cosmetics and beauty industry. At the same time, the companies introduced Inventra, a product that integrates RFID technology directly into shrink sleeve labels. These shrinkable all-round sleeve labels fit snugly onto the packaging when heated. Inventra now enables identification at the individual item level and provides real-time data on stock levels and goods movements, the companies announced.

Providing information at any time

The aim is to further develop cosmetic packaging into digital information carriers along the entire supply chain. Unlike labels that are attached to the surface afterwards, the RFID component is embedded in the structure of the sleeve film. This is intended to preserve design freedom and product protection. The solution enables unique identification of individual products and improves transparency and traceability. The background to this includes growing legal requirements for product data and digital labelling systems. RFID technology is already more widespread in other retail sectors.

Reducing high losses

According to the companies involved, the system could reduce inventory discrepancies and improve availability in retail. In addition, the solution provides theft protection and counterfeit security. Currently, the industry loses around ten percent of its inventory annually due to overproduction, spoilage or expiry dates, the companies explained. The French company Sleever is contributing its expertise in shrink sleeve labels to the partnership, while the US materials and identification specialist Avery Dennison is contributing its know-how in RFID inlays and digital identification solutions.
