Esters – easily biodegradable
Lanxess launches Cosmelin, a new range for cosmetics and personal care
The Cologne-based speciality chemicals group Lanxess has launched a new product range of readily biodegradable esters for cosmetics and personal care products under the name ‘Cosmelin’. They are specifically aimed at manufacturers of skin and hair care products, suncare products and make-up. According to Lanxess, the Cosmelin esters offer great flexibility in formulation. They have been developed to deliver high sensory performance in both silicone-containing and silicone-free formulations. They can also be used as an alternative to silicone.
Rapid degradation in the environment
The Cosmelin products meet the requirements of the OECD standard for readily biodegradable substances and serve as a substitute for cyclomethicone and dimethicone – silicone compounds widely used in cosmetics. Compared to these, the Cosmelin esters degrade more quickly and completely in the environment. “With the Cosmelin esters, Lanxess is responding to the growing demand for ‘clean beauty’ products and environmentally friendly ingredients”, says Lanxess manager Vince Patram. The product range offers a broad sensory spectrum, from light, quickly absorbed textures to rich, film-forming formulations, and is suitable for sensitive skin.
A wide range of applications
In skincare, these esters are designed to provide breathable hydration without leaving the skin feeling heavy or clogging the pores. They offer versatile textures for a silky, powdery or velvety feel on the skin. In suncare, Cosmelin offers high solubility for organic UV filters and forms water-resistant yet lightweight protective films that do not leave a white cast. In make-up, Cosmelin aids wetting, the distribution of colour pigments and colour intensity. In hair care, it can reduce friction, improve the hair’s suppleness and impart a natural shine. Lanxess intends to further expand its Cosmelin product portfolio in the coming years.
