Active ingredient manufacturer Mibelle Biochemistry has unveiled EpiCalsome, a new skincare solution that utilises calcium as its key electrolyte. The aim is not only to moisturise but also to support the skin’s biological processes, thereby promoting long-term skin health. According to Mibelle, electrolytes are becoming increasingly important in skincare as they have a moisturising effect, strengthen the skin barrier and improve elasticity. By supporting water transport within the skin, electrolytes are said to contribute to a smoother and healthier complexion. Furthermore, they can enhance the effects of other ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, peptides and vitamins, and are therefore particularly effective in multifunctional products.

Calcium transport system

According to the company, calcium plays a key role in the skin barrier and the renewal of the epidermis. Conversely, an imbalance in calcium levels caused by ageing, environmental stress or metabolic disorders such as diabetes can lead to dry, sensitive skin and slowed regeneration. In EpiCalsome, calcium ions are encapsulated in phospholipids to increase their bioavailability. This high-quality delivery system is designed to ensure that the calcium penetrates the skin more effectively and is released there in a targeted manner. This restores the required calcium levels. According to Mibelle, at the heart of the innovation is a proprietary, patent-pending double-cone vector technology.

Regeneration following skin irritation

According to Mibelle, a model of reconstructed human epidermis demonstrated that the combination of calcium and phospholipids improves skin structure and barrier function. This led to the successful restoration of a dense, fully stratified epidermis and a significant increase in loricrin expression, a key protein for the formation of a functional skin barrier. Furthermore, the active ingredient is said to support regeneration following skin irritation. EpiCalsome is therefore specifically aimed at applications for sensitive, stressed and ageing skin, as well as at products in the growing segment of barrier repair and moisturising care.
