Data sets for healthy skin

Helmholtz Institute HIPS and Beiersdorf collaborate on microbiome research

The Beiersdorf Group and the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS) are joining forces to investigate the role of the skin microbiome in maintaining healthy skin. Two projects, funded by Beiersdorf, will identify natural substances produced by microorganisms on the skin that influence skin balance. The collaboration is based on data sets from HIPS and Saarland University on microorganisms that inhabit human skin – both in healthy individuals and in people with skin conditions. The data, which was originally collected with the aim of identifying new active ingredients, will now also be used for skin care. ‘Together with Beiersdorf AG, we want to filter out precisely those molecules that play a role in skin health and develop them into new products,’ says Andreas Keller, head of the HIPS Clinical Bioinformatics department.
