Bio-surfactants for personal care

Sironix Renewables presents product line made from recycled materials

Sironix Renewables, the US-based specialist in surfactants made from recycled materials, is now expanding its portfolio of cleaning agents to include personal care products. With the launch of the Furasoft-LFS and Furasoft-SF surfactants, the Seattle-based company has introduced two bio-based surfactants that utilise proven furan structures for personal care products as well. Compared to conventional petrochemical surfactants, they are more sustainable yet still highly effective. Both ingredients are designed for applications such as shampoos, shower gels and hand soaps and, according to the company, can be easily integrated into existing formulations and production processes.

Significantly lower emissions

“We developed the care range to meet the growing demand for high-performance, mild, safe and sustainable products,” said Christoph Krumm, CEO and co-founder of Sironix Renewables. The company has already received positive feedback from customers. The surfactants are based on so-called furan structures and are produced from recycled raw materials. According to the company, they are entirely bio-based. Compared to petrochemical alternatives, they generate 65 to 75 per cent fewer greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, they are free from sulphates, nitrosamines and 1,4-dioxane. They also do not contain petroleum-based amines or polyethylene glycols and can meet stricter regulatory requirements and consumer expectations without compromising on effectiveness.

Production to be expanded

Both ingredients are designed to enable particularly mild, skin-friendly formulations and offer high foaming performance, creaminess and stability. The production process has already been successfully demonstrated on a pilot scale at an established sulphonating plant; industrial production is now being scaled up and the team further expanded. Sironix already supplies several brand manufacturers of eco-friendly cleaning and personal care products and is exploring further partnerships for industrial applications. The company also aims to enter into further brand partnerships with ready-to-use formulations.
