Beiersdorf focuses on viable bacteria
New Eucerin active ingredient utilises microbiome research for blemish-prone skin
The Beiersdorf Group is launching a new skincare range for acne-prone skin under the Eucerin brand. “Dermopure Clinical Probiom8” is based on a patented cosmetic active ingredient containing viable bacterial strains naturally found on the skin, reports the Hamburg-based cosmetics group. Rather than fighting bacteria, the approach relies on probiotics to restore the natural balance of the skin’s microbiome. At its heart is the ingredient TopiC.A, which contains two viable bacterial strains in a dormant state that occur naturally on healthy-looking skin. They are activated during the skincare routine and support the natural microbiome.
The billion-market for acne skincare
With this new product, the company also aims to further expand its derma business and strengthen Eucerin’s position in a key segment of dermatological skincare. According to figures from Euromonitor, cited by Beiersdorf, the global market for products for acne-prone skin grew by almost nine per cent between 2020 and 2025, reaching retail sales of 4.6 billion euros. Globally, around one in five people are affected by blemished skin. Among young adults aged between 16 and 24, the proportion is as high as 28.3 per cent.
Two decades of research
According to the group, the new Eucerin technology is based on more than two decades of microbiome research. Since 2014 alone, Beiersdorf has carried out more than 120 studies in this field. Findings and technologies from the Belgian life sciences company S-Biomedic have also been incorporated into the development. Beiersdorf acquired the start-up in full in 2022. “Research into the skin microbiome has fundamentally expanded our knowledge,” says Gitta Neufang, Head of Research & Development. “It opens up new perspectives on how skincare can be developed in the future and is a key building block for the next generation of scientifically based skincare.”
