Bacteria for home and skin care
Unilever's microbiome technology opens up new opportunities for more care
The world's leading consumer goods group Unilever is increasingly utilising bioscience technologies and probiotics in its product development. The new product from the Cif cleaning brand, which is now being launched in Europe, contains so-called "friendly bacteria", which are said to remain effective even days after the detergent has been used, Unilever announced. This is the first time the company has launched a product with probiotics on the European market. In a survey on household care, 70 per cent of respondents had previously stated that they would like longer-acting products so that they would not have to clean as often.
Probiotics wake up later
"Cif Infinite Clean" uses the patented "Continuous Mist" process. The probiotics contained in the formulation initially remain inactive until they come into contact with residues such as dirty surfaces. Only on contact can they germinate, feed on dirt and activate. They also reach areas that are difficult to access and ensure greater cleanliness, which should last for up to three days. Probiotics are living microorganisms. They are found in yoghurt, among other things, to strengthen the intestinal microbiome.
A growth market
The patent-pending, bioscience-based formula combines natural probiotics. According to Unilever, it also combats unpleasant odours and offers long-lasting odour protection on upholstered furniture. "Cif Infinite Clean" is supplied with a special spray head to distribute the probiotic cleaner evenly and finely on all surfaces. The product is available in a reload format to reduce plastic waste. Unilever expects the global market for probiotic cleaners to continue to grow.
