AI for the skin

Sebamed launches online skin analysis tool

A new, AI-powered skin analysis tool on the website of skincare brand Sebamed is designed to help consumers find the right skincare. The new digital service analyses an uploaded photo of the face and evaluates skin characteristics. Based on this, the tool provides an assessment of individual skin needs and offers recommendations for a tailored skincare routine using Sebamed products. The technology was developed by the young Berlin-based company “Thea Care” in collaboration with dermatologists, skin specialists, cosmetic scientists and AI experts, according to the company.

Trained using skin data

The service analyses skin characteristics that could be improved through appropriate care, such as moisture levels or blemishes. The assessment is based on standardised image analysis. To this end, the artificial intelligence was trained using datasets labelled by dermatological experts. The service is operated in compliance with data protection regulations and on servers within the EU. Uploaded photos are pseudonymised before transmission, used solely for analysis and subsequently deleted.

A step towards greater personalisation

The aim of the digital service is to translate dermatological expertise into digital applications and to provide guidance on choosing Sebamed’s medical skincare products. “Many people struggle to find the right skincare products for themselves,” says Lina Praefke, a consultant in the Medical and Scientific Department at Sebapharma. “With our AI skin analysis tool, we want to enable a better understanding of individual skin needs and help create a skincare routine.” According to the company, the service is a first step towards more personalised skincare.
