Transformation of the NIVEA creme jar
Beiersdorf focuses on environmentally friendly packaging
Beiersdorf has redesigned the iconic NIVEA cream jar and now uses 80 percent recycled aluminium. This change significantly reduces CO2 emissions, as the production of recycled aluminium requires 95 per cent less energy than the production of new material. The project team overcame numerous challenges, such as ensuring a stable supply chain and adapting the production process. This change is part of Beiersdorf’s “CARE BEYOND SKIN” agenda, which aims to reduce the environmental footprint to net zero by 2045.
Challenges and successes during implementation
The integration of recycled aluminium into the NIVEA Creme jar required extensive testing to find the right alloy that is compatible with the existing machines and processes. Another important aspect was the precise creation of the new design, which conveys the message “80 percent recycled aluminium” in various languages.
Positive consumer response and future goals
The sustainable NIVEA cream jar was launched worldwide this year and met with a positive response from consumers. Beiersdorf plans to further increase the proportion of recycled material, thus making their contribution to reducing CO2 emissions. This measure is a further step in the company’s long-term strategy to achieve a 30 percent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2025 and net zero by 2045.
