Sustainable pioneering solution for Guerlain
Knoll Packaging develops refillable jars made of paper for luxury skincare products
US packaging manufacturer Knoll Packaging has teamed up with French luxury brand Guerlain to unveil a new skincare refill solution for the anti-ageing cream "Orchidée Impériale – The New Longevity Cream". According to both companies, the refillable jar from the Ecoform Molded Pulp series is patent pending and represents a first for the premium segment. The solution is the first moulded pulp container to meet the high technical requirements for high-quality skincare refill packaging. The pulp mixture is based on plant-based raw materials such as bagasse – a by-product of sugar cane processing – and FSC-certified wood fibres.
New methods for the highest standards
With this new development, Guerlain and Knoll Packaging aim to meet the growing demand for recyclable packaging solutions in the premium segment. The concept has already been recognised as the best refill at the "Formes de Luxe" awards in Monaco and is considered an important step for eco-friendly luxury packaging. The packaging was developed over more than three years of collaboration between the innovation teams. It consists of moulded cellulose, which is commonly used for secondary packaging, and is specially designed to protect and preserve sensitive skincare formulations. New methods were developed specifically to evaluate performance and meet Guerlain's high quality standards. More than 9,500 test pieces were produced and around 80 airtightness tests were carried out, reports Knoll Packaging.
First a luxury item, then waste paper
The moulded cellulose meets functional and design requirements that previously could only be fulfilled by glass or plastic, but can be disposed of in the waste paper bin after use. For use as primary packaging, the developers employed new processes for shaping and surface finishing cellulose. A thin protective film prevents the cream from drying out, while precision tools enable a smooth, high-quality surface. The material does not require any new plastic and is significantly lighter than comparable alternatives. The refillable jar can be easily inserted into and removed from the packaging and also fits into Guerlain's existing packaging system.
