Bain & Company Publishes Its 10th China Shopper Report

COVID-19 has a strong impact on the purchasing habits of Chinese consumers.

This is one of the findings of Bain & Company’s latest China Shopper Report. According to the consulting company, fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) sales were flat in China in 2020 vs. 2019, with several shifts across price segments, categories and channels. One of the reported trends that took root in the pandemic are community group buys, where Internet platforms sell to “community captains” who handle delivery throughout the neighborhood. The authors of the study conclude that for their activities in China, brands need to restructure their portfolio to boost efficiency and lower cost in the new deflationary, volume-driven growth environment.
