Hyaluronic acid (HA) is among the most popular active ingredients in cosmetic products with moisturizing and anti-ageing effects. Due to its hydrophilic properties, it has been widely used in various cosmetic products containing water such as creams (both o/w and w/o emulsions) and serums. However, its incorporation into anhydrous, oil-based formulations including face and body oils, hair cosmetics (oils, masks, balms), lip balms and lipsticks or decorative cosmetics remains a technological challenge. Moreover, little is known about the effects of hyaluronic acid on hair and lips. For these reasons we developed a novel form of hyaluronic acid in oil (HA-OIL), which is easy to use, compatible with oils, and evaluated its benefits for the skin, hair and lips. Our studies revealed enhanced skin and hair penetration and multiple positive effects of HA-OIL on the skin properties, hair growth and strength, and lip volume and smoothness.
