Cosmetics Industry Reports A Solid First Half Year
The German Cosmetic, Toiletry, Perfumery and Detergent Association (IKW) has published a market overview of the German cosmetics and household care market. In the first six months of 2019, German suppliers were particularly successful due to strong export figures and stable development at home.
Domestic Sales Stagnate Slightly
In Germany, manufacturers recorded a slight stagnation of -0.1 per cent in the first six months of the year, generating a total of EUR 7.8 billion in sales. In the domestic market, the main drivers were skin and face care as well as oral and dental care and detergents.
Strong Numbers in Exports
German companies, nonetheless, performed particularly well abroad. In total, export growth amounted to 7.3 per cent as compared to the same period of the previous year. In fact, the cosmetics segment on its own recorded an 8.4 per cent increase in sales. Fragrances and colour cosmetics were the main growth drivers.
Promising Overall Development
Buoyed by strong export-related figures, the beauty and household care businesses achieved overall sales growth of 2.6 per cent in the first half of 2019. This corresponds to total sales figures of EUR 12.8 billion. The clear driving force behind this growth was the cosmetics industry, where sales even increased by 3.2 per cent overall.
