The Internet of Things is reaching hair salons
The Beauty Care division of consumer goods giant Henkel has recently introduced the Schwarzkopf Professional SalonLab™ system. Henkel says this makes it possible to have personalised hair analysis using near-infrared measurements and colour consultation using augmented reality, as well as manufacturing haircare products that are tailored to the client’s needs. According to Henkel, SalonLab will be available in 2018 in selected Schwarzkopf Professional hair salons in Europe and the USA.
SalonLab: the hair salon of the future
Henkel says that hairdressers will be able to analyse the condition and colour of the hair on a molecular level with the new digital product from Henkel Beauty Care. Up till now, it has only been possible for hairdressers to analyse surface hair qualities - based on their experience and expertise.
According to Henkel, customised haircare products can be produced directly in the salon, using data on the inner condition and exact colour of the client’s hair collected by SalonLab. They say that this introduces a new dimension to the haircare experience, which includes an individual consultation with the hairdresser and a recommendation for appropriate products.
As Dr. Nils Daecke, Head of Digital Marketing at Henkel Beauty Care, explains: "With Schwarzkopf SalonLab digital system, we are defining the beauty experience in a completely new way for hairdressers and their clients. At the same time, we are laying the foundations for disruptive, data-driven business models – combined with Schwarzkopf’s decades of hair expertise – which are wholly tailored to the individual wishes of our clients."
The synergy between the SalonLab Analyzer, App and Customizer
The company says that the complete Schwarzkopf SalonLab system consists of the SalonLab Analyzer and the SalonLab Customizer – supported by the SalonLab Consultant App.
The manufacturers describe the SalonLab Analyzer as a hand-held device, equipped with near-infrared and light sensors, that measures the inner condition, moisture level and exact colour of the hair.
Building on the data collected, the SalonLab Costumizer develops a customised haircare product from hundreds of different combinations of ingredients and fragrances in adaptable portion sizes.
The corresponding App connects the digital devices, displays the results graphically, and makes a personal colour consultation possible, using augmented reality technology. It also provides the formula for an individualised haircare product.
